Telling Time (La Hora)

Asking the Time:

  • ¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?
  • ¿Tiene hora? - Do you have the time?

Basic Structure:

  • Use “Es la” for 1:00
  • Use “Son las” for all other hours

Exact Hours

  • Es la una - It’s 1:00
  • Son las dos - It’s 2:00
  • Son las tres - It’s 3:00
  • Son las cuatro - It’s 4:00
  • Son las cinco - It’s 5:00
  • Son las doce - It’s 12:00

Minutes

After the Hour (+):

  • Son las tres y cinco - It’s 3:05
  • Son las tres y diez - It’s 3:10
  • Son las tres y cuarto - It’s 3:15 (quarter past)
  • Son las tres y veinte - It’s 3:20
  • Son las tres y veinticinco - It’s 3:25
  • Son las tres y media - It’s 3:30 (half past)

Before the Hour (-):

  • Son las cuatro menos veinticinco - It’s 3:35 (25 to 4)
  • Son las cuatro menos veinte - It’s 3:40 (20 to 4)
  • Son las cuatro menos cuarto - It’s 3:45 (quarter to 4)
  • Son las cuatro menos diez - It’s 3:50 (10 to 4)
  • Son las cuatro menos cinco - It’s 3:55 (5 to 4)

Special Times

  • Es mediodía - It’s noon
  • Es medianoche - It’s midnight

AM and PM

  • De la mañana - in the morning (AM)
  • De la tarde - in the afternoon (PM)
  • De la noche - at night (PM)

Examples:

  • Son las ocho de la mañana - It’s 8:00 AM
  • Son las tres de la tarde - It’s 3:00 PM
  • Son las diez de la noche - It’s 10:00 PM

Today, Yesterday, Tomorrow:

  • Hoy - Today
  • Ayer - Yesterday
  • Anteayer - The day before yesterday
  • Mañana - Tomorrow
  • Pasado mañana - The day after tomorrow

This, Last, Next:

  • Esta semana - This week
  • La semana pasada - Last week
  • La semana próxima / La próxima semana - Next week
  • Este mes - This month
  • El mes pasado - Last month
  • El mes próximo - Next month
  • Este año - This year
  • El año pasado - Last year
  • El año próximo - Next year

After/In X Days

  • En dos días - In two days
  • Dentro de tres días - In three days
  • Después de dos días - After two days
  • En una semana - In a week
  • Dentro de un mes - In a month
  • En un año - In a year

Examples:

  • Te llamo en dos días - I’ll call you in two days
  • Vuelvo dentro de una semana - I’ll be back in a week
  • El examen es en tres días - The exam is in three days

“Not Yet” and “Still”

Todavía / Aún (Still):

  • Todavía estoy aquí - I’m still here
  • Aún no ha llegado - He hasn’t arrived yet
  • Todavía estoy esperando - I’m still waiting
  • Aún tengo hambre - I’m still hungry

Todavía no / Aún no (Not yet):

  • Todavía no he comido - I haven’t eaten yet
  • Aún no está listo - It’s not ready yet
  • ¿Has terminado? - Todavía no - Have you finished? - Not yet
  • Aún no lo sé - I don’t know yet

Ya (Already/Yet):

  • Ya he comido - I’ve already eaten
  • Ya llegó - He already arrived
  • ¿Ya terminaste? - Did you finish already?
  • Ya no vive aquí - He no longer lives here

Examples:

  • Todavía no he desayunado - I haven’t had breakfast yet
  • Ya son las cinco - It’s already 5 o’clock
  • Aún estoy trabajando - I’m still working
  • ¿Ya llegaste? - Have you arrived already?

  • Siempre - Always
  • Nunca - Never
  • A veces - Sometimes
  • A menudo - Often
  • Raramente - Rarely
  • De vez en cuando - From time to time

Duration:

  • Durante - During
  • Por - For (time period)
  • Hace - Ago
  • Desde - Since

Examples:

  • Estudio durante dos horas - I study for two hours
  • Vivo aquí desde 2020 - I’ve lived here since 2020
  • Llegué hace una hora - I arrived an hour ago
  • Trabajo aquí por tres años - I work here for three years

At What Time? (¿A qué hora?)

Asking:

  • ¿A qué hora empieza? - At what time does it start?
  • ¿A qué hora llegas? - At what time do you arrive?

Answering:

  • A la una - At 1:00
  • A las dos - At 2:00
  • A las tres y media - At 3:30
  • A mediodía - At noon

Examples:

  • La clase empieza a las 9 - Class starts at 9
  • Como a las 2 de la tarde - I eat at 2 PM
  • Me acuesto a las 11 de la noche - I go to bed at 11 PM
