Subject Pronouns (Pronombres Personales)

Used as the subject of a sentence:

Singular:

  • Yo - I
  • - You (informal)
  • Él - He
  • Ella - She
  • Usted - You (formal)

Plural:

  • Nosotros/Nosotras - We
  • Vosotros/Vosotras - You all (informal, Spain)
  • Ellos/Ellas - They
  • Ustedes - You all (formal, or all in Latin America)

Examples:

  • Yo hablo español - I speak Spanish
  • comes pizza - You eat pizza
  • Nosotros vivimos aquí - We live here

Reflexive Pronouns (Pronombres Reflexivos)

Used with reflexive verbs (actions done to oneself):

  • me - myself
  • te - yourself (informal)
  • se - himself, herself, yourself (formal), themselves
  • nos - ourselves
  • os - yourselves (informal, Spain)

Examples:

  • Me lavo las manos - I wash my hands
  • Te levantas temprano - You get up early
  • Se llama María - Her name is María
  • Nos duchamos - We shower
  • Se visten rápido - They get dressed quickly

Possessive Pronouns (Pronombres Posesivos)

Replace nouns to show ownership:

Singular:

  • mío/mía - mine
  • tuyo/tuya - yours (informal)
  • suyo/suya - his, hers, yours (formal)

Plural:

  • míos/mías - mine
  • tuyos/tuyas - yours (informal)
  • suyos/suyas - his, hers, yours (formal)
  • nuestro/nuestra/nuestros/nuestras - ours
  • vuestro/vuestra/vuestros/vuestras - yours (informal, Spain)

Examples:

  • Este libro es mío - This book is mine
  • La casa es tuya - The house is yours
  • Los coches son nuestros - The cars are ours
  • ¿Es suya esta maleta? - Is this suitcase yours/his/hers?

Demonstrative Pronouns (Pronombres Demostrativos)

Point to specific things:

Near (this, these):

  • éste/ésta/éstos/éstas - this one, these ones
  • esto - this (neuter)

Medium (that, those):

  • ése/ésa/ésos/ésas - that one, those ones
  • eso - that (neuter)

Far (that over there):

  • aquél/aquélla/aquéllos/aquéllas - that one over there
  • aquello - that over there (neuter)

Examples:

  • Prefiero éste - I prefer this one
  • Ése es mejor - That one is better
  • Aquél es mi hermano - That one over there is my brother
  • ¿Qué es esto? - What is this?

Relative Pronouns (Pronombres Relativos)

Connect clauses:

  • que - that, which, who
  • quien/quienes - who, whom
  • el/la/los/las cual(es) - which, who
  • cuyo/cuya/cuyos/cuyas - whose
  • lo que - what, that which

Examples:

  • El libro que leo - The book that I read
  • La persona que vino - The person who came
  • El hombre con quien hablo - The man with whom I speak
  • La casa cuyo dueño conozco - The house whose owner I know
  • Lo que dices es verdad - What you say is true

Interrogative Pronouns (Pronombres Interrogativos)

Ask questions:

  • ¿Qué? - What?
  • ¿Quién/Quiénes? - Who?
  • ¿Cuál/Cuáles? - Which one(s)?
  • ¿Cuánto/Cuánta/Cuántos/Cuántas? - How much/many?
  • ¿Dónde? - Where?
  • ¿Cuándo? - When?
  • ¿Cómo? - How?
  • ¿Por qué? - Why?

Examples:

  • ¿Qué quieres? - What do you want?
  • ¿Quién es? - Who is it?
  • ¿Cuál prefieres? - Which one do you prefer?
  • ¿Cuántos años tienes? - How many years do you have?

Prepositional Pronouns (Pronombres Preposicionales)

Used after prepositions:

  • - me
  • ti - you (informal)
  • él/ella/usted - him, her, you (formal)
  • nosotros/nosotras - us
  • vosotros/vosotras - you all (informal, Spain)
  • ellos/ellas/ustedes - them, you all

Special forms with “con” (with):

  • conmigo - with me
  • contigo - with you
  • consigo - with himself/herself/yourself

Examples:

  • Para - For me
  • Sin ti - Without you
  • Con él - With him
  • Voy contigo - I’m going with you
