Usos del Tiempo

The pretérito imperfecto is used to:

1. Describe habitual actions in the past
2. Set the scene or background in stories
3. Describe physical or emotional states in the past
4. Express age in the past
5. Tell time in the past

Ejemplos

Habitual actions:

• Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque - When I was a child, I used to play in the park
• Todos los veranos íbamos a la playa - Every summer we would go to the beach
• Mi abuela siempre cocinaba paella - My grandmother always cooked paella

Descriptions:

• Era un día soleado - It was a sunny day
• La casa tenía un jardín grande - The house had a big garden
• El hombre llevaba un sombrero - The man was wearing a hat

States:

• Yo estaba cansado - I was tired
• Ellos querían viajar - They wanted to travel
• Me gustaba la música - I liked music

Age and time:

• Tenía diez años - I was ten years old
• Eran las tres de la tarde - It was three in the afternoon

-AR verbs (hablar):

• Yo hablaba

-ER verbs (comer):
