Condicional Simple

Usos del Tiempo

The condicional simple is used to:

1. Express hypothetical situations
2. Make polite requests
3. Give advice or suggestions
4. Express probability or conjecture in the past
5. Express desires or wishes

Ejemplos

Hypothetical situations:

• Compraría una casa si tuviera dinero - I would buy a house if I had money
• Viajaríamos más si pudiéramos - We would travel more if we could
• Con más tiempo, estudiaría francés - With more time, I would study French

Polite requests:

• ¿Podrías ayudarme? - Could you help me?
• Me gustaría un café, por favor - I would like a coffee, please
• ¿Tendría un momento? - Would you have a moment?

Advice:

• Yo que tú, hablaría con él - If I were you, I would talk to him
• Deberías descansar - You should rest
• No haría eso - I wouldn’t do that

Probability (past):

• Serían las cinco cuando llegó - It must have been five when he arrived
• Tendría veinte años - He/She must have been twenty years old

Conjugación Regular

All verbs use the infinitive + endings:

-AR verbs (hablar):

• Yo hablaría
• Tú hablarías
• Él/Ella/Usted hablaría
• Nosotros/as hablaríamos
• Vosotros/as hablaríais
• Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes hablarían

-ER verbs (comer):

• Yo comería
• Tú comerías
• Él/Ella/Usted comería
• Nosotros/as comeríamos
• Vosotros/as comeríais
• Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes comerían

-IR verbs (vivir):

• Yo viviría
• Tú vivirías
• Él/Ella/Usted viviría
• Nosotros/as viviríamos
• Vosotros/as viviríais
• Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes vivirían

Verbos Irregulares

The same irregular stems as future tense:

Decir: diría, dirías, diría… Hacer: haría, harías, haría… Poder: podría, podrías, podría… Poner: pondría, pondrías, pondría… Querer: querría, querrías, querría… Saber: sabría, sabrías, sabría… Salir: saldría, saldrías, saldría… Tener: tendría, tendrías, tendría… Venir: vendría, vendrías, vendría… Haber: habría (there would be)
