Los Comparativos
Comparatives are used to compare two things or people.
Comparative of Superiority (más… que)
Structure: más + adjective/adverb + que
Examples:
- Juan es más alto que Pedro - Juan is taller than Pedro
- Este libro es más interesante que ese - This book is more interesting than that one
- María corre más rápido que su hermana - María runs faster than her sister
- El coche es más caro que la bicicleta - The car is more expensive than the bicycle
Comparative of Inferiority (menos… que)
Structure: menos + adjective/adverb + que
Examples:
- Pedro es menos alto que Juan - Pedro is less tall than Juan
- Esta película es menos aburrida que la otra - This movie is less boring than the other one
- Hoy hace menos frío que ayer - Today it’s less cold than yesterday
- El tren es menos rápido que el avión - The train is less fast than the plane
Comparative of Equality (tan… como)
Structure: tan + adjective/adverb + como
Examples:
- Ana es tan inteligente como Luis - Ana is as intelligent as Luis
- Mi casa es tan grande como la tuya - My house is as big as yours
- Él habla tan bien como tú - He speaks as well as you
- Este restaurante es tan bueno como el otro - This restaurant is as good as the other one
Equality with Nouns (tanto… como)
Structure: tanto/a/os/as + noun + como
Examples:
- Tengo tantos libros como tú - I have as many books as you
- Hay tanta gente como ayer - There are as many people as yesterday
- Bebo tanto café como mi hermano - I drink as much coffee as my brother
- Tiene tantas amigas como yo - She has as many friends as I do
Irregular Comparatives
Bueno (good):
- Más bueno → mejor (better)
- Este vino es mejor que ese - This wine is better than that one
Malo (bad):
- Más malo → peor (worse)
- Esta película es peor que la otra - This movie is worse than the other one
Grande (big) - for age:
- Más grande → mayor (older/bigger)
- Mi hermano es mayor que yo - My brother is older than me
Pequeño (small) - for age:
- Más pequeño → menor (younger/smaller)
- Ella es menor que su prima - She is younger than her cousin
Superlatives
Relative Superlative:
- El/La/Los/Las más/menos + adjective + de
- Juan es el más alto de la clase - Juan is the tallest in the class
- Esta es la película más interesante del año - This is the most interesting movie of the year
Absolute Superlative (-ísimo):
- Adjective + -ísimo/a/os/as
- La comida está riquísima - The food is extremely delicious
- Es facilísimo - It’s very easy
- Estoy cansadísimo - I’m extremely tired
